What is Tank Cycling? Understanding the Basics of Aquarium Startup

When you set up a new aquarium, it's natural to want to add fish right away. However, introducing livestock without proper preparation will likely result in death. The cause is incomplete tank cycling (also called the nitrogen cycle).

Tank cycling is the process of establishing bacteria that neutralize ammonia produced from fish waste and uneaten food. Specifically, the following biological conversion cycle becomes established in the tank:

• Ammonia (NH₃): Released from fish gills and waste. Extremely toxic
• Nitrite (NO₂⁻): A byproduct of ammonia broken down by Nitrosomonas bacteria. Also highly toxic
• Nitrate (NO₃⁻): A byproduct of nitrite further broken down by Nitrobacter bacteria. Relatively harmless and removable through water changes

When this cycle functions stably, the aquarium is said to be "cycled." Since bacteria colonize filter media and substrate, running the filter continuously is fundamental to cycling.

Method 1: Fishless Cycling (Most Recommended)

A method that grows beneficial bacteria without using any fish, making it an ethical choice that doesn't stress livestock. This is now the standard approach in aquarium-advanced countries.

Steps

1. Set up the tank and turn on the filter and heater
2. Add pure ammonia solution (without fragrance or surfactants) and adjust to 2–4 ppm
3. Test water quality daily or every two days (ammonia, nitrite, pH)
4. Once ammonia begins to drop, add more to maintain 2 ppm
5. After nitrite peaks, it will gradually decline
6. The cycle is complete once both ammonia and nitrite remain at 0 ppm for 24+ hours

Tips and Cautions

Ammonia solution is available at pharmacies and online retailers, but it's essential to choose pure ammonia without fragrance or dyes. A good test is to pour water into a bottle, shake it, and confirm there's no foam.
