Winter Succulent Care — Cold Weather Protection Guide

Winter care for succulents varies greatly depending on their growth type. Identify which type your succulents belong to and provide the appropriate winter care.

Winter Care by Growth Type

Winter Growers (Aeonium, Lithops, etc.)

• Winter is their active growing season, so continue watering as normal
• Keep them in a well-lit location to encourage growth
• However, be careful about freezing below 0°C

Summer Growers (Echeveria, Kalanchoe, etc.)

• Nearly dormant in winter. Reduce watering drastically to once or twice a month
• Keeping them on the dry side increases cold tolerance
• Maintain a minimum of 5°C or above

Spring/Autumn Growers (Haworthia, Sedum, etc.)

• Growth slows but doesn't stop completely
• Water approximately once every two weeks
• They can overwinter without issues at 5--10°C

When to Bring Plants Indoors

• Bring plants inside before the minimum temperature drops below 5°C
• Check weather forecasts regularly in case of sudden cold snaps
• Place them near a south-facing window indoors where they receive adequate sunlight

Frost Prevention and Condensation Control

• Window areas get cold at night, so it's safest to move plants away from windows at night
• Condensation droplets on leaves can cause rot. Ensure good air circulation
• Placing plants in a styrofoam box provides excellent insulation
