Monstera Variety Guide — Deliciosa to Adansonii Comparison

Monstera is one of the most popular foliage plants, characterized by large leaves with distinctive splits and holes. Their presence is unmatched in interior design, frequently seen in cafes and shop displays. However, "Monstera" encompasses multiple species with quite different characteristics and appearances. Here is a guide to the major Monstera varieties.

Deliciosa (M. deliciosa)

The most common Monstera, also called the Swiss Cheese Plant. Mature leaves exceed 50cm in diameter with deep splits and large holes (fenestrations). Young plants have smaller, uncut leaves. Grows vigorously with proper support — a moss pole encourages larger leaves. Tolerates moderate shade but produces better fenestration with bright indirect light.

Adansonii (M. adansonii)

Smaller than Deliciosa with more elongated leaves covered in numerous oval holes. Excellent as a trailing or climbing plant. Several forms exist including narrow-form and wide-form. More compact and suited to smaller spaces.

Variegated Varieties

Variegated Monsteras (Albo Variegata, Thai Constellation, Aurea) feature white, cream, or yellow patches on leaves. Extremely popular and expensive. Variegation is unstable in some types and can revert to all-green. Growth is slower due to reduced chlorophyll.

Obliqua

The rarest Monstera, sometimes called the "unicorn plant." Leaves are mostly hole with minimal green tissue. Often confused with Adansonii — true Obliqua is extremely rare and expensive.
