Cuttings

Suited for species that root easily, such as shimpaku juniper and satsuki azalea. Cut about 10cm of semi-hardwood (current-year branch slightly hardened) around June, apply rooting hormone, and insert into akadama soil. Maintain shade and high humidity; rooting can be confirmed in 2–3 months. The advantage of cuttings is obtaining a tree with identical characteristics to the parent.

Air Layering

Ideal for creating material with thick trunks from species like Japanese maple and zelkova. In May, girdle-strip the bark from a section of trunk, wrap with moistened sphagnum moss, and secure with plastic wrap. New roots develop from the stripped area in 2–3 months, after which you cut below the roots and plant. The major advantage is obtaining material with an already thick trunk in a short time.

Seed Growing

Growing from seed allows the creation of material with beautiful root spread and natural trunk patterns for pine and maple bonsai. Stratify pine and maple seeds (cold-moist treatment in a refrigerator) over winter and sow in spring. Manage seedlings in a sunny location after germination.

Grafting

A specialized technique used for propagating Japanese white pine and specific varieties. Graft the desired variety onto hardy rootstock such as Japanese black pine.

• Cutting material: 3–5 years for small-size bonsai, 7–10+ years for medium or larger
• Air-layered material: 1–2 years to begin styling
• Seedling material: 10+ years for a fully developed bonsai
