Winter Agave Care — Cold Weather Protection Guide

Agave cold tolerance varies significantly by species. Know the cold hardiness of popular varieties and provide appropriate winter care.

Cold Tolerance by Variety

• Titanota: Down to about 0°C. Leaves are damaged by frost, so indoor management is safest
• Horrida: Down to about -5°C. Relatively cold-hardy, but frost protection is needed
• Parryi: Down to about -20°C. Extremely cold-hardy; can overwinter outdoors
• Americana: Down to about -5°C. Large size makes moving difficult, so use frost protection measures in place

Indoor Winter Care Tips

• Place near a south-facing window to maximize sunlight
• Choose a location where heating airflow doesn't blow directly on the plant
• Keep minimum temperatures at 5°C or above for safety. 10°C or above is ideal for Titanota

Dry Period Management

Winter agave care is based on near-complete watering cessation.

• From December to February, limit watering to once a month in small amounts, or stop completely
• Withholding water raises the sugar concentration in cells, improving cold tolerance
• Cold, wet soil is the primary cause of root rot. Keep the soil on the dry side

Supplemental LED Lighting

Winter days are short, and insufficient light causes etiolation.

• Using plant grow LEDs for approximately 12 hours per day prevents etiolation
• When window light alone is insufficient, LEDs help maintain a beautiful plant form
• Position LEDs 20--30 cm away from the leaves
