The yellowhead jawfish is a Caribbean marine fish known for its striking yellow head and pale blue-green body. It has a distinctive habit of digging its own burrow in sandy rubble and hovering nearby, giving keepers a rare window into natural burrowing behavior right in the tank. Shy by nature, it darts into its burrow at the slightest disturbance, so it needs calm tankmates rather than boisterous ones. Topping out at around 10cm as an adult, it stays compact and manageable while still being full of personality. It's a great pick for anyone who enjoys quietly watching a fish's natural behavior unfold.

關於金頭後頜魚
The yellowhead jawfish is a Caribbean marine fish with a bright yellow head that burrows in sandy substrate. Reaching about 10cm, it suits intermediate keepers.
迎接金頭後頜魚前需要了解的7件事
1Needs deep sand for burrowing
Because it digs and lives in a burrow, the tank needs a sufficiently deep bed of sand or fine rubble. If the substrate is too shallow or the wrong texture, it won't be able to maintain its burrow and will stay stressed.
2Prone to jumping out
It can leap out of the tank when startled, so a secure, tight-fitting lid is essential. It's also worth sealing any gaps around cords or equipment cutouts where it could squeeze through.
3Naturally shy temperament
It's sensitive to sudden noises and movement, quickly retreating into its burrow when startled. Avoid sudden motions near the tank, especially before it settles in.
4Choose peaceful tankmates
Because it's so timid, aggressive or fast-moving fish will keep it hiding and stressed. Pair it with equally calm, peaceful tankmates instead.
5Best suited to intermediate keepers
Managing the sand bed and preventing jumping require some specific know-how, so this species is considered suited to intermediate keepers. It's best kept by those who already have some marine fishkeeping experience.
6Stays small at up to 10cm
Adults max out at around 10cm, so you don't need an oversized aquarium. Just make sure there's enough sandy floor space dedicated to its burrow.
7Prepare the tank before arrival
Before bringing one home, make sure the sand bed is deep enough for burrowing and the lid is securely fitted. Having a ready hiding spot helps it settle into its new environment more smoothly.
金頭後頜魚的常見問題
- Q.What kind of temperament does it have?
- A.It's a very shy fish that darts into its burrow at the slightest noise or sudden movement. Once it settles in, you'll often see it hovering calmly near the entrance of its burrow.
- Q.How deep should the sand bed be?
- A.Since it digs and lives in a burrow, the substrate needs to be reasonably deep. If it's too shallow, the fish can't maintain its burrow and won't settle down.
- Q.Does it jump out of the tank?
- A.Yes, it can jump suddenly when startled, so a secure lid is essential. Even small gaps can become an escape route, so check the fit carefully.
- Q.Can it be kept with other fish?
- A.It can be kept with calm, peaceful tankmates. Combining it with aggressive or fast-moving fish tends to keep it hiding constantly, which becomes a source of stress.
- Q.Is it suitable for beginners?
- A.It's generally considered suited to intermediate keepers rather than beginners. Because it requires specific care around the sand bed and jump prevention, it's best to have some marine fishkeeping experience first.
