A beautiful insect with iridescent shimmer. Famous for being used in Horyuji Temple's Tamamushi Shrine.
The scarab beetle, or dung beetle (family Scarabaeidae), is one of the most culturally significant insects in human history, revered in ancient Egypt as a symbol of the sun god Ra. Scarabs are distributed across Africa, the Mediterranean basin, and the Middle East. They are distinguished by their remarkable behavior of rolling balls of animal dung, which serve both as food and as breeding chambers buried underground. Adults measure approximately 10–40 mm and are typically a glossy black. Captive husbandry is exceptionally challenging, as a continuous supply of fresh animal dung (from cattle, horses, or other herbivores) is required. Temperatures of 22–28°C are appropriate. Successful breeding requires recreating the natural environment of buried dung balls in soil. Due to these demanding requirements, scarabs are more commonly kept as display or specimen beetles than as long-term pets. Their extraordinary natural history and cultural legacy continue to fascinate insect enthusiasts worldwide.
