Plants purchased online may not arrive in perfect condition due to shipping stress and environmental changes. However, with proper initial care, most plants will recover just fine. This article provides a detailed guide on how to assess plant condition upon delivery and what to do if problems are found.

Arrival Inspection Procedure

Checking the Outer Box

First, inspect the box condition. Check for major dents, holes, or water damage. If significant damage is present, photograph the box before opening. This may be needed as evidence in case of shipping damage.

Opening Tips

When opening the box, be careful not to push the blade too deep with your box cutter, as you could damage the plant inside. Open in a well-lit area, and we recommend recording the unboxing process on your smartphone.

Plant Condition Checklist

Leaf Inspection

Discoloration: Check for yellowed leaves. A few yellow lower leaves are a normal physiological response to shipping stress and usually not a concern. However, widespread yellowing may indicate root problems.

Wilting: Wilted leaves may be caused by dehydration or high temperatures during shipping. In most cases, watering will restore them within a few hours to one day.

Spots or disease signs: Check for brown or black spots, white powdery residue resembling mold, or water-soaked lesions. These may indicate disease, so isolate the plant from others.

Pests: Pay special attention to leaf undersides, leaf axils, and stem-leaf junctions. Check for spider mites, aphids, scale insects, and other pests.

Stem and Trunk Inspection

Check for any soft or mushy areas on stems or trunks. Softened sections may indicate advancing rot. Also check for breaks or significant wounds.

Root Inspection

For potted plants, gently remove from the pot to check root condition. Healthy roots are white to light tan and firm. Darkened, slimy, or foul-smelling roots may indicate root rot.
