Budgett's Frog is a flat-bodied, fully aquatic frog known for its oversized head, which makes up about a third of its body length, and its endearing, almost comical appearance. It spends most of its time submerged, poking only its eyes and nostrils above the water while it waits motionless for prey to pass by. Don't let the charming looks fool you, though — when threatened, this frog puffs up its body, lets out a surprisingly loud squeal, and isn't shy about biting. Adults reach about 11 to 12 cm in length, with males noticeably smaller than females. With a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, it's a long-term companion best suited to keepers with some prior amphibian experience.
