The green iguana is a large herbivorous lizard native to Central and South America, instantly recognizable by its vivid green scales and distinctive spiny dorsal crest. With patient handling, they can become quite tame and learn to recognize their owners, making them one of the most rewarding reptile companions. As adults can reach 1.5–2 meters in length, long-term housing planning is essential before bringing one home.

The green iguana (Iguana iguana) is native to tropical rainforests stretching from Mexico to northern South America, where it has long been valued by indigenous peoples as a food source and cultural symbol. Global demand as a pet surged from the 1970s onward, making it one of the most recognizable reptiles in the hobby today. Its vivid green scales, prominent dewlap, and pineal eye on the crown are distinctive physical hallmarks, while mature males often take on orange or yellow hues. Though naturally herbivorous and generally calm, iguanas can become territorial and defensive during breeding season. With consistent gentle handling and a well-designed habitat, many individuals learn to approach their keepers willingly—combining the cool, exotic appeal of a reptile with a personality that continues to win devoted enthusiasts worldwide.
1Plan for Their Adult Size
Hatchlings are small, but adult iguanas can grow to nearly 1.5–2 meters in total length. Many keepers ultimately need a large custom enclosure or even a dedicated room. Planning for adult size before purchase will save significant stress and expense down the line.
2High-Output UVB Is Essential
Iguanas require strong UVB exposure to synthesize vitamin D3 and properly absorb calcium. Insufficient UVB can lead to metabolic bone disease. Use a high-output reptile-specific UVB lamp and replace it on schedule, even if the bulb still appears to emit visible light.
3Strict Herbivore Diet
Iguanas are strict herbivores that thrive on calcium-rich leafy greens such as bok choy, mustard greens, and dandelion leaves. Avoid feeding insects or animal protein, as this can stress their kidneys over time. Also limit high-oxalate or goitrogenic vegetables like spinach and cabbage.
4Taming Takes Time and Patience
Daily, gentle handling from a young age helps iguanas become accustomed to human contact. However, stressed individuals may whip their tail or bite, so it is important to read their body language and progress at a comfortable pace without forcing interaction.
5Humidity Supports Healthy Shedding
Iguanas thrive at humidity levels of around 60–80%. Insufficient humidity can cause incomplete sheds and skin problems. Regular misting, a reliable hygrometer, and a humid hide or water feature help maintain the appropriate moisture levels year-round.
