The Skookum is a relatively new breed that emerged in the United States in the 1990s, created by crossing the LaPerm — known for its beautiful curly coat — with the Munchkin, famous for its distinctively short legs. The name "Skookum" comes from a Chinook word meaning strong or brave, reflecting the bold personality packed into this compact cat. The coat ranges from loose waves to tight ringlets and comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Skookums are curious, sociable, and adaptable, bonding readily with family members and other pets. While high jumping can be a challenge due to their short legs, they move with surprising agility on the ground and thoroughly enjoy interactive play. As one of the rarest cat breeds in the world, finding a Skookum is a genuinely special experience for any cat lover.
1Rare and Hard to Find
Skookums are bred by very few breeders worldwide, and availability in Japan is extremely limited. Plan to start your search early and be prepared to wait, as reputable breeders often have long waiting lists.
2Active Despite Short Legs
Despite their short legs inherited from the Munchkin, Skookums are lively and playful. They may struggle with high jumps, but they love chasing toys and running around indoors. Daily interactive play sessions are important for their well-being.
3Caring for the Curly Coat
The curly coat inherited from the LaPerm is prone to tangles and benefits from brushing two to three times a week. Avoid over-bathing, as frequent washing can loosen the natural curl — once a month is generally sufficient.
4Understanding Skeletal Health Risks
The gene responsible for the short-leg trait is associated with a form of chondrodysplasia, which can place stress on the spine and joints. Regular veterinary check-ups and weight management to prevent obesity are especially important for this breed.
5Affectionate and Dislikes Solitude
Skookums are highly people-oriented and prefer to stay close to their owners. Extended time alone can cause stress, so consider adopting a companion cat or gradually conditioning them to periods of solitude from an early age.

Care difficulty, lifespan, size and diet — all basics covered.
Due to their rarity, Skookums typically cost between 200,000 and 400,000 yen. In addition to the purchase price, budget for first-year veterinary expenses including wellness exams, vaccinations, and spay or neuter surgery.
7Intelligent and Trainable
Skookums inherit the intelligence of both parent breeds and tend to pick up their name and litter training fairly quickly. Positive reinforcement using treats and praise works well, and many Skookums enjoy learning simple tricks.
