The Bombay is a relatively modern breed developed in the 1950s by American breeder Nikki Horner, who crossed sable Burmese with black American Shorthairs in pursuit of a domestic cat resembling a miniature black panther. The name pays homage to the black leopards of India, evoking the city once known as Bombay. Its jet-black coat absorbs light with a satin-like sheen, contrasting beautifully with large, round copper to gold eyes. Medium-sized and muscular, the Bombay feels surprisingly heavy when held. Personality-wise, this breed is deeply people-oriented, forming strong bonds and shadowing its chosen humans throughout the day. Intelligent and adaptable, Bombays generally coexist well with children and other pets. Their affectionate nature, combined with a playful curiosity, makes them a lively and warming presence in any home.
1Craves Constant Attention
Bombays can develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods, as they strongly crave human interaction. Families who are frequently away should consider providing enrichment toys or adopting a second companion cat.
2Dog-Like Sociability
Often described as dog-like, Bombays tend to follow their owners around the home and may even come when called by name. Their friendly demeanor toward strangers also makes them well-suited to households with frequent visitors.
3Prone to Weight Gain
Bombays have hearty appetites and are prone to obesity if food is left out freely. Scheduled meals with portion control are important for maintaining a healthy weight. Regular weigh-ins help catch any gradual changes early.
4Naturally Heat-Seeking
Bombays tend to run warm and are natural heat-seekers, often gravitating toward laps or sunny spots. In summer, be mindful of overheating risks and ensure the room temperature is regulated with fresh water always available.
5Low-Maintenance Coat
The Bombay's short, close-lying coat sheds minimally and requires only one or two brushings per week. Feeding a nutritionally balanced diet and regular gentle brushing will help maintain its signature glossy black sheen.
6Watch for Breathing Issues

Care difficulty, lifespan, size and diet — all basics covered.
Due to its Burmese heritage, the Bombay may have a slightly shortened nasal passage, leading some individuals to snore or make nasal sounds. Monitor breathing after vigorous play or in hot, humid conditions, and consult a vet if any concerning symptoms arise.
7Needs Daily Interactive Play
Bombays are highly intelligent and can become destructive or vocal if under-stimulated. Dedicating 10 to 20 minutes of interactive play each day helps release energy and deepens the bond with their owner. Puzzle feeders and wand toys are particularly popular with this breed.
