屬性
The Genetta is a relatively new breed developed around 2006 in the United States. Breeders crossed short-legged Munchkins with wild-patterned breeds such as the Bengal and Savannah to recreate the look of a genet — a small carnivore from the family Viverridae. The result is a cat with vivid spotted markings and characteristically short legs, remaining compact at 2–4 kg in adulthood while maintaining a lean, muscular build. Intelligent and curious, the Genetta forms genuine bonds with its family while retaining a lively, alert personality. Still rare outside dedicated enthusiast communities, this breed is attracting growing attention from owners who want a distinctive companion with an exotic look and an approachable, manageable temperament.
1Exercise Despite Short Legs
Despite their short legs, Genettas are active cats that need regular play and movement. Provide cat trees and horizontal play spaces suited to their stature. Lack of activity can contribute to obesity or behavioral stress.
2Wild Look, Warm Personality
Beneath the wild spots lies a warm, people-oriented personality with a tendency to be affectionate. Genettas are intellectually curious and responsive to toys and environmental enrichment. They are generally reported to get along well with other pets and children.
3High-Protein Diet Is Key
A dry food rich in animal protein is recommended for Genettas. Foods high in grains may be harder to digest, so check ingredient lists carefully. Since they can be prone to weight gain, monitoring portion sizes is also important.
4Watch for Spinal Strain
Short-legged breeds tend to have longer torsos, which can place extra strain on the spine. Arrange furniture to minimize high drops or sudden vertical movements. Regular veterinary checkups are important for early detection of any musculoskeletal concerns.
5Cost of a Rare Breed
Genettas are rare in Japan, so acquisition costs can be relatively high. It is advisable to obtain one from a knowledgeable and reputable breeder, choosing your source carefully. Plan ahead for lifetime costs including veterinary care and food.

Care difficulty, lifespan, size and diet — all basics covered.
Introducing your Genetta kitten to people, other animals, and varied environments early on supports a calm and well-adjusted adult. Given their high curiosity, early stimulation helps build mental stability. Offer diverse experiences at a comfortable pace.
7Grooming Is Relatively Easy
Genettas typically have short to medium-length coats that can be maintained with brushing a few times per week. Regular coat checks help keep their distinctive spotted pattern looking its best. Don't forget basic care such as ear cleaning and nail trimming.
