屬性
The Ragdoll is a relatively modern breed developed in California in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker, who crossed a white longhaired cat with breeds including the Birman and Burmese to establish today's distinctive type. Their most recognizable features are a large, well-muscled frame, vivid blue eyes, and a colorpoint or mitted coat pattern with a silky, low-mat texture that feels as inviting as it looks. Often described as dog-like in their loyalty, Ragdolls frequently follow their owners from room to room and greet visitors with calm curiosity rather than wariness. Their low aggression and tolerant temperament make them approachable for first-time owners, though their strong social bond means they do best with regular companionship. Living with a Ragdoll is a uniquely serene experience — their relaxed presence and quiet affection have a way of making any home feel warmer.
1Slow to Grow, Large at Maturity
Ragdolls take three to four years to reach full size, with males sometimes weighing 6–9 kg. Monitor weight regularly during growth and adjust portions accordingly. Plan ahead for their adult size when choosing cat trees, litter boxes, and carriers.
2Strictly an Indoor Cat
Ragdolls have a naturally trusting temperament and limited instinct to avoid outdoor dangers. Keeping them strictly indoors protects them from traffic, other animals, and disease. Install secure window screens and door barriers before bringing one home.
3Regular Coat Maintenance
Although their semi-long coat is less prone to matting than some longhaired breeds, brushing two to three times a week prevents shedding buildup and tangles. Increase frequency during spring and autumn shedding seasons. A steel comb and slicker brush work well together.
4Calm and People-Oriented
Ragdolls are so people-oriented they often follow their owners from room to room, earning them the nickname "puppy cats." They prefer calm interaction over rough play, and long periods alone can cause stress. In busy households, a companion cat or dedicated daily bonding time helps keep them content.
5Watch for Heart Conditions
Ragdolls have an elevated risk of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) compared to many other breeds. Annual cardiac ultrasound screenings are advisable alongside routine vet check-ups. When purchasing from a breeder, ask about HCM screening results for the parents.

6Higher-Than-Average Costs
Ragdoll kittens typically range from 150,000 to 300,000 yen depending on color and breeder. As a large breed, ongoing costs for food, veterinary care, and supplies tend to run higher than average. Estimating monthly expenses in advance helps ensure a sustainable long-term commitment.
7Great with Kids and Other Pets
Ragdolls generally adapt well to households with young children or other pets, thanks to their easygoing temperament. A gradual introduction — starting with separate spaces and allowing scent-sharing before face-to-face meetings — helps establish a smooth relationship. Providing a quiet retreat during the adjustment period is always a good idea.
