屬性
The British Shorthair traces its origins to Britain, where selective breeding from native cats began in earnest during the late nineteenth century. After populations were severely reduced during World War II, crosses with Persians and other breeds helped rebuild the bloodline and contributed to the breed's distinctively rounded appearance. Today the British Shorthair is recognized by its coin-shaped face, large expressive eyes, stocky body, and plush double coat, most famously seen in blue-grey but available in a wide range of colours including black, white, and bicolour patterns. In temperament, this breed is notably calm and rarely high-strung, making it a practical choice for first-time owners or households with a busy routine. Its strong independent streak means it copes reasonably well with periods of solitude. The combination of dignified, bear-like presence and quietly charming personality is what draws so many people to this enduring breed.
1Loves You from Afar
Many British Shorthairs prefer to show affection by simply being in the same room rather than sitting on your lap. Respecting their personal space and letting them initiate contact is key to building a trusting bond.
2Prone to Weight Gain
Their compact, muscular build combined with a relatively low activity level makes British Shorthairs susceptible to obesity. Measuring portions carefully and monitoring weight regularly will help keep them in healthy shape throughout their life.
3HCM Screening Matters
British Shorthairs are among the breeds with a higher reported incidence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). When choosing a breeder, ask about HCM screening history, and plan for periodic cardiac ultrasound exams after bringing your cat home.
4Weekly Brushing Is Enough
Their dense short coat rarely mats, but shedding increases during seasonal changes. Brushing once or twice a week with a slicker brush or comb removes loose hair effectively and helps reduce hairball formation.
5Slow to Reach Full Size
British Shorthairs are slow developers and may take three to five years to reach full physical maturity. Feeding a quality kitten formula until the appropriate age supports proper skeletal and muscle development during this extended growth period.

Care difficulty, lifespan, size and diet — all basics covered.
With their moderate energy levels and calm temperament, British Shorthairs adapt extremely well to full indoor living. A tall cat tree and a perch near a window give them enough enrichment to stay mentally satisfied without outdoor access.
7Budget: Purchase and Upkeep
In Japan, British Shorthair kittens are typically priced between ¥150,000 and ¥400,000 depending on pedigree and coat colour. Monthly ongoing costs — including food, litter, and routine veterinary care — generally range from ¥10,000 to ¥20,000.
