红竹鼠蛇

The Red Bamboo Rat Snake (known in Japanese as Beninamera) is a small, strikingly colored colubrid with a red-to-orange body marked by two black stripes running its full length; in some subspecies these appear as black crossbands instead, giving the species notable pattern variation. Its head is narrow, pointed, and somewhat angular. In the wild it lives on the forest floor of cool mountain habitats, spending much of its time at or just below the surface among leaf litter and soil, so keeping it comfortable in captivity means recreating a cool, humid environment with places to burrow. It stays fairly compact, reaching a maximum length of just over a meter, with large females averaging around 102 cm. Because of its specific temperature needs, it is generally considered a species better suited to keepers with some reptile experience.

关于红竹鼠蛇

The Red Bamboo Rat Snake is a small colubrid with red-orange, black-striped coloring, native to cool mountain forest floors. Adults reach just over a meter, and it is considered a species for intermediate keepers.

迎接红竹鼠蛇前需要了解的7件事

  1. 1Needs Cool Conditions

In the wild this species lives on the forest floor of cool mountain habitats, so it prefers noticeably lower temperatures than typical tropical snakes. High heat and humidity can cause health problems, so keep a close eye on room and enclosure temperatures and maintain a proper gradient.

  2. 2Provide Burrowing Hides

This is a terrestrial to semi-fossorial species that naturally burrows under leaf litter and into soil. Give it a deep enough substrate to burrow in, along with several secure hiding spots to help it settle in.

  3. 3Generally Calm Temperament

Despite its narrow, pointed, somewhat angular head, this snake is generally not particularly defensive. That said, individuals vary, so avoid forcing handling early on and let it get used to you gradually.

  4. 4Stays Around 1m as an Adult

Adults reach a maximum length of just over a meter, with large females averaging around 102 cm, making this a relatively compact snake. Its modest size means it can be comfortably housed without an especially large enclosure.

  5. 5Pattern Varies by Individual

The typical pattern is a red-to-orange body with two black stripes running the full length, but some subspecies show black crossbands instead. When choosing an individual, it is worth looking closely at its specific pattern.

  6. 6Feeding Basics

Like other ratsnakes, regular feeding with appropriately sized prey is the basic approach. Appetite can fluctuate with stress or environmental changes, so it helps to keep an eye on feeding timing and each individual's response.

  7. 7Why It Suits Intermediate Keepers

Because it needs careful temperature management and an enclosure that reflects its natural habitat, this species is generally rated as suited to intermediate keepers. It is a good fit for those with some reptile-keeping experience, or who research its natural history closely before bringing one home.

红竹鼠蛇的常见问题

Q.Is the Red Bamboo Rat Snake subject to CITES?
A.No, it is not subject to CITES.
Q.How big do adults get?
A.Adults reach a maximum length of just over a meter, with large females averaging around 102 cm. That makes it fairly compact compared to many mid-to-large snake species.
Q.Is this a good species for a first-time keeper?
A.It is generally considered a species for intermediate keepers. Because its care involves attention to temperature and habitat details, it suits keepers with some reptile experience or those who have researched its natural history closely.
Q.Does the pattern vary between individuals?
A.Yes. The typical pattern is a red-to-orange body with two black stripes running the full length, but some subspecies show black crossbands instead.
Q.What kind of setup does it need?
A.In the wild it lives on the forest floor of cool mountain habitats, so a cooler temperature range along with deep substrate for burrowing and secure hides suits it well.
