后颌鱼

Jawfish are endearing saltwater fish known for digging burrows in the sand and peering out with just their faces visible. Naturally shy, they dart back into their burrows at the first sign of danger, but once settled in, they'll often hover near the burrow entrance, watching their surroundings with keen, expressive eyes. Some species are mouthbrooders, with males incubating eggs in their mouths until they hatch, a distinctive reproductive behavior. Reaching just 5 to 12 cm as adults and living around 3 to 7 years, jawfish are fed primarily on frozen and prepared foods. Their burrowing habits and need for a carefully managed sand bed make them a fish best suited to intermediate keepers.

关于后颌鱼

Jawfish are charming saltwater fish that dig burrows in the sand and peek out with just their faces. Learn about their temperament, care difficulty, adult size, lifespan, and feeding needs.

迎接后颌鱼前需要了解的7件事

  1. 1Needs a sand burrow

Jawfish dig their own burrows in the substrate and use them as a home base. Provide a deep bed of appropriately sized sand along with sturdy rockwork so the burrow entrance doesn't collapse.

  2. 2Shy, skittish nature

Jawfish are sensitive to sudden movement and noise, darting into their burrows at the first sign of trouble. Avoid startling them near the tank, and they'll gradually grow more comfortable over time.

  3. 3Prone to jumping out

Many jawfish are known jumpers and can leap out of an uncovered tank. A secure lid or cover is essential for keeping them safe.

  4. 4Pair with calm tankmates

Aggressive tankmates can keep jawfish too intimidated to leave their burrows. Choose peaceful, even-tempered fish as companions instead.

  5. 5Mainly frozen foods

Jawfish are typically fed frozen or prepared foods delivered near their burrow entrance. Since they rarely stray far from home, target feeding nearby helps reduce leftover food.

  6. 6Some are mouthbrooders

In certain species, males incubate fertilized eggs in their mouths until they hatch. If you observe this behavior, avoid disturbing the tank and let it proceed undisturbed.

  7. 7Lives 3 to 7 years

Adults stay compact at 5 to 12 cm and typically live 3 to 7 years. Because they're a long-term commitment, consistent water quality and substrate maintenance matter.

后颌鱼的常见问题

Q.Can beginners keep jawfish?
A.Jawfish are generally considered suitable for intermediate keepers. Managing a proper sand bed for burrowing and accommodating their skittish nature calls for some prior saltwater experience.
Q.Does the tank need a lid?
A.Yes. Jawfish are prone to jumping, so a secure, well-fitted lid is strongly recommended.
Q.Can jawfish be kept with other fish?
A.Yes, as long as tankmates are peaceful. Aggressive fish can cause jawfish to hide in their burrows out of fear, so choose calm, compatible species.
Q.What should jawfish be fed?
A.Frozen foods and prepared diets are the mainstay. Delivering food near the burrow entrance helps ensure they eat well.
Q.Do jawfish breed in captivity?
A.In some species, males carry and incubate eggs in their mouths, a behavior known as mouthbrooding. Breeding success in captivity depends on tank conditions, but this behavior is a well-known trait of the species.
