Kraatz's Stag Beetle

Lucanus kraatzi occurs from southwestern China into northern Vietnam. The Japanese Wikipedia entry for the genus places the nominate L. k. kraatzi in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Tibet, notes that it resembles L. nobilis but differs in the shape of the ear-like process, and places the subspecies L. k. giangae in northern Vietnam. Records in GBIF are confined to Vietnam and China. The BE-KUWA 2025 edition registers the two separately, at 71.8mm for the nominate form and 62.7mm for the Vietnamese stock, so the subspecies differ in the size they reach. It reaches Japan as an imported stag beetle but never in quantity.
