Beetle & Stag Beetle Keeping for Beginners

Rhinoceros beetles and stag beetles are beloved insects across all generations. Recent advances in breeding technology have made many domestic and foreign species widely available. This guide covers the basics for first-time keepers.

Choosing a Breeding Container

• Mite-proof ventilated containers: Built-in filter prevents fruit flies. Ideal for indoor keeping

For one adult pair, a small case (about 23 cm wide) is sufficient. Use medium to large cases for larvae or egg-laying setups. Secure lids are essential to prevent escapes.

Substrate and Bedding

• Adult beetle substrate: Conifer chips or hardwood substrate are common. Those with deodorizing and anti-mite properties are convenient

Food Types and Feeding

Above 30°C in summer dramatically increases mortality risk. AC rooms or temperature-controlled cabinets provide peace of mind. For winter, overwintering species like the giant stag beetle need thick substrate and a cool location around 15°C.

Identifying Males and Females

Stag Beetles - **Male**: Well-developed mandibles. Larger body - **Female**: Small mandibles. Some species identifiable by front tarsal shape

At larval stage, third-instar larvae can be sexed by checking for ovary presence at the abdominal tip (females of many species show a cream-colored dot on the ventral side).
