Planet's Stag Beetle

Lucanus planeti ranges from China into Vietnam. The Japanese Wikipedia singles out the V-shaped development of the clypeus as its mark; the Chinese L. hermani resembles it but carries an inner tooth at the base of the mandible, and the Taiwanese L. formosanus is said to share its build. Specimen and observation records in GBIF cluster in China and Vietnam. The BE-KUWA 2025 edition registers a captive record of 89.6mm and a wild record of 90.0mm, which places the species among the larger Lucanus. It reaches Japan as an imported stag beetle; as with the genus generally, bringing out large beetles calls for cool rearing and a long larval period.
