The Minuet is a relatively young breed established around 2001 by American breeder Joseph Smith, originally called the "Napoleon." The goal was to combine the Munchkin's characteristic short legs with the Persian's lush coat and gentle disposition; the breed is now recognized by TICA. Its most distinctive features are short limbs, a rounded head, and large almond-shaped eyes, available in both shorthair and longhair varieties with a wide range of coat colors and patterns. In Japan, the breed has surged in popularity in recent years thanks to its irresistibly charming appearance. Temperamentally, the Minuet blends Persian calmness with Munchkin curiosity, adapting well to a quiet indoor lifestyle while still enjoying regular play. The breed bonds readily with all family members, making it an excellent choice for first-time cat owners.

1Short Legs and Joint Care
The short legs inherited from the Munchkin are a natural genetic trait, and most individuals live active, healthy lives. However, jumping down from high places can strain their joints, so providing low cat trees and step stools is advisable. Keeping weight in check also helps support long-term joint health.
2Grooming Frequency
The longer coat inherited from the Persian is prone to tangles, so brushing two to three times per week is recommended. Pay extra attention to areas behind the ears, under the arms, and at the base of the tail where mats tend to form. Regular bathing and occasional trimming can help maintain a clean coat.
3Calm Indoor Temperament
Minuets tend to be calm cats that prefer lounging near their owners over vigorous play. They can become stressed with extended alone time, so daily interaction and play sessions are important. They also tend to adapt reasonably well to multi-cat households or homes with dogs.
4Tear Staining and Facial Care
The flattened facial structure inherited from the Persian can cause excess tearing and brownish staining under the eyes, known as tear staining. Gently wiping around the eyes daily with a soft cloth or pet-safe wipe helps keep the area clean. Consult a veterinarian if staining or discharge becomes severe.
5Exercise and Play Needs
While high jumps are not their strength, Minuets enjoy ground-level play with interactive toys. Around 15 to 20 minutes of play per day helps prevent obesity and relieves stress. Toys that encourage chasing, such as wand toys and tunnel toys, tend to be especially popular.

6Initial and Ongoing Costs
Minuets are a relatively rare breed, and purchase prices from breeders typically range from roughly 200,000 to 400,000 yen. Monthly upkeep including food, litter, grooming supplies, and routine vet visits generally runs around 10,000 to 20,000 yen. Factor in regular professional grooming costs as well.
7Compatibility with Children and Seniors
Their gentle and sociable nature makes Minuets a good fit for households with young children or elderly family members. That said, their unique skeletal structure means adults should supervise and assist when young children pick them up, ensuring no excess pressure is placed on the legs. Teaching the whole family to handle them gently goes a long way.
