The whip scorpion or vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus) is a venomless invertebrate that resembles a scorpion but lacks a stinger, distributed from North America into Central America. When defending itself it sprays an acetic-acid-containing fluid from the base of its tail, the source of the name vinegaroon. It captures prey with large pincer-like pedipalps. Husbandry provides substrate for burrowing, hiding places, and water, with moderate humidity. Live prey such as crickets is offered. Venomless and relatively docile, it is easy to handle, though the sprayed fluid is irritating and warrants caution. Its distinctive appearance makes it a popular species.
