What to check before adopting

• Attention to malocclusion.

  High

  Teeth grow continuously throughout life, and poor bite alignment results in malocclusion. A diet centered on hay is important for prevention. If loss of appetite or drooling is observed, consult a veterinary clinic experienced with rabbits.

• Attention to gastrointestinal stasis.

  High

  Gastrointestinal stasis—in which the movement of the digestive tract stops when appetite drops—is a critical condition. Observe appetite and bowel movements daily, and seek veterinary care immediately if abnormalities such as not eating or no bowel movements occur.

• Breeding environment and temperature.

  Medium

  They are sensitive to heat and temperature control is necessary. Confirm whether you can provide an appropriate cage, bedding, and space for safe exercise.

• Lifespan and lifelong care.

  Medium

  They may live around 10 years. Confirm whether you can provide long-term care and ongoing veterinary medical support.

Key points to check

Examine the teeth and area around the mouth.

Good:

Front teeth are properly aligned, and the area around the mouth is not wet.

Caution:

Drooling, loss of appetite, or overgrown front teeth may indicate malocclusion—seek veterinary care.

Examine the rear end and appetite.

Good:

The area around the rear end is clean, eats well, and has regular bowel movements.

Caution:

Soiling around the rear end or reduced appetite and bowel movements are signs of illness such as gastrointestinal stasis—seek veterinary care promptly.

Examine the coat, eyes, and nose.

Good:

The coat is dense and glossy, with no discharge from the eyes or nose.

Caution:

Hair loss, eye discharge, or nasal discharge are signs to monitor health status.
