What to check before adopting

• Exercise and Play Time

  Medium

  Ferrets are highly curious with high exercise needs and require daily play time and a safe indoor environment. Confirm that you can arrange a safe play environment, including managing small items that could be accidentally ingested.

• Checking for predisposed health conditions

  High

  Adrenal disease, insulinoma, and lymphoma commonly develop in middle age and beyond. If you notice changes such as hair loss, unsteadiness, or weight loss, consult a veterinary clinic experienced with ferrets.

• Temperature Management

  High

  They are extremely heat-sensitive with a high risk of heatstroke, so summer temperature control is essential. Confirm whether you can provide an environment that maintains an appropriate temperature.

• Lifespan and lifelong care.

  Medium

  They live approximately 6–10 years. Considering that veterinary costs may increase from middle age onward, confirm whether you can continue caring for them throughout their life.

Key points to check

Check body condition and overall health status.

Good:

A firm body with dense coat, active movement, and good appetite.

Caution:

Symmetrical alopecia, weight loss, or ataxia may indicate adrenal disease or insulinoma; consult a veterinarian.

Assess temperament and vitality

Good:

Highly curious, socialized to people, and plays actively.

Caution:

Lethargy and poor responsiveness are signs to check health status.

Checking coat and skin

Good:

Coat has luster and shows no alopecia.

Caution:

Alopecia from the tail or rear may indicate adrenal disease; consult a veterinarian.
