What to check before adopting

• Temperament: Independence and Socialization

  High

  While loyal to their owners, they have strong independence and wariness toward those outside the family. Socialization during puppyhood—exposure to various people, sounds, and environments—significantly affects their future temperament.

• Seasonal Shedding and Grooming

  Medium

  With a high-insulation double coat, seasonal shedding increases significantly. Confirm whether you can maintain regular brushing.

• Checking for predisposed health conditions

  High

  Allergic dermatitis, patellar luxation, and glaucoma are known conditions. Confirm the parent dog's health information, and consult a veterinarian about any concerning symptoms such as itchy skin or cloudy eyes.

• Timing of Adoption and Native Breed Exception

  Medium

  Dogs and cats in general must, as a rule, be transferred after 56 days (8 weeks) of age. Designated native breeds such as Shiba Inus have a temporary exception allowing transfer at 49 days (7 weeks) when breeders transfer directly to the new owner. In either case, puppies that have spent sufficient time with their parents and siblings for socialization are preferable.

Cloudiness or redness may indicate eye disease such as glaucoma; seek veterinary care promptly.
