Agave striata
An agave from central Mexico with dense, narrow needle-like leaves. Unique form distinct from typical agaves. Produces many offsets and forms clumps.
Agave striata is a medium-sized agave widely distributed across limestone drylands at 1,000–2,500 m elevation in Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí in northeastern Mexico. It differs dramatically from most agaves in appearance: thin, rigid, needle-like leaves radiate densely from the center to form a spherical, sea-urchin-like silhouette. The leaves are round in cross-section, 30–60 cm long with sharply pointed tips. Leaf margins lack teeth but may produce fine fibrous threads. Mature plants reach 60–90 cm in diameter and can develop a short trunk over time, adding further character. Cold hardy to approximately -5°C and extremely drought-tolerant, it is easy to maintain. Combining the aesthetic of yuccas or dasylirions with agave toughness, it offers a uniquely sculptural garden presence.
