An agave with narrow leaves and abundant white thread-like fibers, similar to Filifera. Sometimes considered a hybrid.
Agave leopoldii is a medium-sized Mexican species closely resembling Agave filifera but distinguished by more abundant and longer white thread-like fibers along its narrow, dark green leaf margins. Its taxonomic status is debated—it is sometimes treated as a variety or natural hybrid of A. filifera—but it is consistently recognized for its ornamental appeal. Mature rosettes reach 30–50 cm in diameter, a manageable size for container growing. The dense curtain of white fibers draped across the rosette gives it an elegant, almost lace-like appearance. Growth is slow; the plant produces offsets for propagation. It performs best in full sun but tolerates bright partial shade. Water conservatively with a well-draining mix, reducing to monthly in winter. Cold tolerance is around 5–8°C. Together with A. filifera and A. geminiflora, it represents the popular 'thread agave' group among Japanese collectors.
