Agave deserti
An agave native to California-Mexico deserts, tolerant of both heat and cold.
Agave deserti, the desert agave, grows across the Sonoran Desert of southern California, western Arizona, and Baja California and Sonora in Mexico—one of North America's most extreme environments. Adapted to scorching heat, intense sun, and minimal rainfall on rocky terrain, it is among the most drought-tolerant agaves. The leaves are blue-gray to grayish-white with white to gray marginal teeth. Mature rosettes reach 30–60 cm tall and 50–80 cm wide. Growth is extremely slow, but the plant is very long-lived. Maximum sunlight is essential; this is a true desert plant that thrives under conditions that would stress most other species. Use an extremely gritty, fast-draining soil mix—coarse sand, pumice, and decomposed granite—and water very sparingly. It reportedly tolerates cold to around -10°C, making it winter-hardy in much of Japan. Native peoples of the American Southwest have long used it for food, fiber, and medicine. Excess moisture is the primary cultivation risk.
