Agave parryi
Compact rosette with densely layered blue-grey leaves. Extremely cold-hardy, suitable for year-round outdoor planting.
Agave parryi is a cold-hardy species found across the highlands of Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas in the United States, extending into Sonora and Chihuahua in northern Mexico. It grows at elevations of roughly 1,000–2,500 m in dry pine forests and grasslands. The leaves are broadly ovate, strongly glaucous blue-gray, with sharp black to dark brown marginal teeth and a stout terminal spine. Mature rosettes reach 40–60 cm tall and up to 90 cm wide. Growth is slow but the plant is exceptionally robust and disease-resistant, making it well-suited for beginners. It thrives in full sun and tolerates temperatures down to approximately -15°C, making outdoor year-round cultivation possible across most of Japan. In-ground plants need little supplemental watering beyond natural rainfall. Its reliability, striking coloration, and cold tolerance make it a popular choice for both private gardens and public landscaping.
