Lobophytum, known by the common name Devil's Hand Leather coral, is a soft coral whose flattened base sends up finger-like lobes that spread out like an open palm. Fine polyps cover the entire surface, giving it a soft, textured look that sways gently in the current. It is hardy and tolerant of changing conditions, making it a popular choice for those new to soft corals who want a stable, low-fuss centerpiece rather than a flashy showpiece.

关于拳参(Lobophytum)
Lobophytum (Devil's Hand Leather) is a hardy, beginner-friendly soft coral with palm-like lobes covered in swaying polyps.
迎接拳参(Lobophytum)前需要了解的7件事
1Prefers steady water flow
Lobophytum does best in moderate, indirect water flow that lets its polyps sway rather than being blasted directly. Avoid placing it where flow is constantly strong and focused on one side, and aim for gentle overall movement instead.
2Moderate lighting works well
Like other soft corals, it relies on symbiotic algae for part of its energy, so moderate lighting is needed. Introduce it under lower light initially and increase gradually, since sudden intense lighting can stress a newly placed specimen.
3Chemical effects on neighbors
Some soft corals release chemical compounds that can inhibit the growth of neighboring corals. When aquascaping, leave adequate spacing between this coral and other corals or invertebrates to reduce the chance of chemical interactions.
4Shrinking isn't always a bad sign
It's common for this coral to periodically contract and look shrunken, often as part of a natural shedding-like process, before expanding again after a while. If it loses color rapidly or stays contracted for an extended period, that's a cue to review tank conditions.
5Sensitive to sudden water changes
Although hardy overall, it can be stressed by abrupt swings in temperature, salinity, or water chemistry. Acclimating new water slowly during water changes and avoiding sudden shifts is key to keeping it healthy long term.
6Avoid frequent relocation
Once it has settled and attached at a spot, moving it means it has to re-establish itself, during which polyp extension may be poor. Decide on placement early in your aquascape and avoid moving it frequently.
7Prepare tank conditions beforehand
Even though it is beginner-friendly and hardy, a newly set-up tank may still have unstable water parameters. Before bringing one home, make sure temperature, salinity, and lighting are properly set up in a stable environment for a smooth introduction.
拳参(Lobophytum)的常见问题
- Q.Can beginners keep Lobophytum?
- A.Yes, it is generally considered beginner-friendly and is a common choice for those starting with soft corals. That said, basic care around water quality, flow, and lighting is still required.
- Q.What if the polyps won't extend?
- A.It may be that flow or lighting isn't quite right, or it could be a temporary contraction after a recent environmental change. Observe it for a while and consider adjusting the flow and light intensity.
- Q.Is it safe to place near other corals?
- A.It can release chemical compounds that affect nearby corals, so it's best to leave some distance between it and other corals rather than placing them too close together.
- Q.Is it subject to CITES regulation?
- A.Lobophytum is not subject to CITES.
- Q.What water quality changes should I watch for?
- A.While hardy, it can be stressed by sudden shifts in temperature or salinity. Acclimating new water slowly during water changes helps avoid these abrupt changes.
