Acropora millepora — sold under the Japanese name Haimatsu Midori-ishi, or "Millepora" — is a reef-building coral in the Acropora family whose short, cylindrical branches spread outward into mounding colonies. Its corallites are uniform in size with flared lower edges, giving the branch surface a distinctive scale-like texture. Coloration is highly variable, ranging from green branches tipped in orange to soft pink, solid orange, and vivid blue, so individual colonies can look strikingly different from one another. It favors shallow water with strong lighting and vigorous flow, and grows best in that kind of environment, which is why it's generally considered a coral for keepers who already have Acropora experience. Watching its skeleton spread outward over months and years is part of the appeal, and a well-grown colony can become a real centerpiece in a reef layout.

1Needs Strong Light
In the wild, this coral lives in shallow, brightly lit water, and it needs strong lighting in captivity too. Without enough light, growth slows and coloration tends to flatten out. Placing it near the top of the tank or on elevated rockwork usually works well.

5Grows Into Mounding Colonies
