Curio rowleyanus
A trailing succulent with round pearl-like leaves strung like a necklace. Beautiful in hanging baskets. Relatively easy to grow and propagate by cuttings.
String of Pearls (Curio rowleyanus, formerly Senecio rowleyanus) is a trailing succulent vine native to the arid regions of South Africa near the Namibian border. Its slender stems carry spherical, bead-like leaves with a transparent epidermal window that channels diffuse light into the plant interior. The cascading stems create a striking visual effect when displayed in hanging baskets or on elevated shelves. Plants can trail 50–100 cm or more. Bright indirect light is optimal; direct sun causes scorching of the delicate globose leaves. Watering must be conservative with the soil thoroughly dried between sessions, as the roots are particularly susceptible to rot in wet conditions. Hot, humid summers are the most challenging period for the plant. Minimum temperature of 5°C is required for overwintering. Propagation by stem cuttings is reliable and rapid.
