An epiphytic cactus with thin stems trailing like threads. No spines, also called jungle cactus.
Rhipsalis is the largest and most widely distributed genus of epiphytic cacti, native to tropical rainforests of Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America, where plants grow on tree branches and rocky outcrops in humid, shaded conditions. One species, R. baccifera, is additionally found in Africa and Asia, making it the only cactus occurring naturally outside the Americas. Unlike desert cacti, Rhipsalis requires very different care: it prefers bright indirect light rather than direct sun, higher humidity, and more frequent watering, as the soil should not be allowed to dry out as completely between waterings. Stem forms are highly variable—cylindrical, flat, or chain-like—and trail attractively 30–100 cm in hanging baskets. Minimum temperature of 5–10°C is acceptable. Stem cuttings root easily. The plant's tolerance for low light and higher moisture makes it a popular choice for indoor tropical plant displays.
