Sarracenia minor
A Sarracenia with window-like transparent patches on the lid, trapping insects confused by light.
Sarracenia minor, the hooded pitcher plant, is native to the coastal plain wetlands of the southeastern United States from North Carolina to Florida. It is distinguished by translucent, window-like areolae on the back of the pitcher and on the arching hood (lid), which allow light to enter the pitcher interior. Insects that have entered the pitcher are confused by these light-transmitting windows and repeatedly attempt to exit through them rather than finding the actual opening, thus prolonging their entrapment. The compact, bulging pitchers reach 20–40 cm in height, and the spring flowers are an attractive reddish-yellow. Cultivation requirements are identical to other Sarracenia: acidic nutrient-poor media, tray watering with pure or rainwater, full sun, and cold winter dormancy. The distinctive window mechanism makes it particularly interesting from a botanical and educational perspective.
