Pinguicula vulgaris
A widely distributed butterwort of the Northern Hemisphere, native to Japan with purple flowers.
Pinguicula vulgaris, the common butterwort, has one of the widest distributions of any carnivorous plant species, occurring across the boreal and subarctic zones of the Northern Hemisphere from North America through Europe to Siberia and Japan. In Japan, it inhabits moist alpine and subalpine rock faces and seepage habitats in Hokkaido and the northern Japanese Alps. The plant forms a rosette of yellow-green, glandular leaves that passively trap small insects, pollen, and other organic particles. Violet flowers are produced in spring to early summer. The species enters winter dormancy via compact resting buds. Cultivation requires cool conditions (high summer temperatures are poorly tolerated), slightly alkaline to neutral mineral media, pure or soft water, and bright indirect light. Wild Japanese plants are protected; only cultivated material should be obtained.
