Pinguicula esseriana
A small Mexican butterwort forming succulent rosettes in winter, beautiful year-round.
Pinguicula esseriana is a small Mexican butterwort native to limestone habitats in Tamaulipas state, Mexico. It is notable for a pronounced seasonal dimorphism: during its active growing season it produces a spreading rosette of flat, mucilage-covered carnivorous leaves, while in cooler or drier periods it contracts into a tight, compact, jewel-like rosette of non-carnivorous succulent leaves—a winter form so attractive that the plant is sometimes grown purely as a succulent curiosity. Its small size makes it ideal for growing in limited spaces. Pale purple to white flowers are produced on slender scapes. Cultivation requires mineral-based, well-draining media (e.g., sand-perlite mixes), watering from above only when nearly dry, and avoidance of waterlogging. Bright indirect light and temperatures of 15–25°C are recommended.
