Pinguicula laueana
A Mexican butterwort with vivid red flowers, considered the most beautiful flowering species.
Pinguicula laueana is a Mexican butterwort found in ravines and on cliff faces in Veracruz and Oaxaca states, widely regarded as the most spectacularly flowering species in the genus. Its flowers are strikingly large for a Pinguicula and are colored a vivid scarlet to deep crimson-red—a coloration unique among butterworts and highly prized by collectors. The thick, glandular leaves passively trap small insects throughout the growing season. Like most Mexican Pinguicula, it exhibits seasonal dimorphism, switching from a large carnivorous summer rosette to a compact succulent winter rosette. Cultivation follows the standard Mexican butterwort protocol: mineral, well-drained media, top watering only when approaching dryness, no waterlogging, bright indirect to weak direct light, and temperatures of 15–28°C.
