Pinguicula gigantea
The world's largest butterwort with rosettes over 30cm, catching large amounts of insects.
Pinguicula gigantea, the giant butterwort, is native to limestone cliffs and stream-side habitats in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is the largest known species of Pinguicula, with mature rosettes regularly exceeding 30 cm in diameter, and its broad, succulent leaves are covered with copious glandular mucilage capable of trapping large numbers of small insects simultaneously. Flowers are small and pale purple to white—understated relative to the plant's impressive foliage. Cultivation differs from many Mexican butterworts in preferring slightly alkaline to neutral, mineral-rich media (limestone grit, perlite, and similar drainage-oriented mixes); overwatering is the most common cause of failure. Watering from above when the substrate is nearly dry is recommended. Temperatures of 15–25°C suit it best, and it may form a smaller winter rosette in cool conditions.
