Mame-keyaki refers to Zelkova serrata specimens selected and cultivated specifically for mame bonsai (palm-sized bonsai, typically under 10 cm) and shohin bonsai. The species is the same as standard zelkova, but individuals with naturally smaller leaves and finer branching tendencies are sought out and propagated for miniature cultivation. Creating an authentic, well-proportioned broom-style (hokidachi) zelkova in a pot small enough to sit in the palm of the hand is considered one of the highest achievements in Japanese miniature bonsai art. The autumn foliage of orange and brown, and the intricate winter branching silhouette, are as visually refined as in full-sized specimens, compressed into a tiny composition.
