Agave zebra
An agave from the Sonoran Desert named for zebra-like horizontal banding on its leaves. Serrated leaf margins and distinctive striping add to its ornamental value. A rare species sought by collectors.
Agave zebra is a medium-sized agave native to rocky slopes at 900–1,800 m elevation from northern Sonora, Mexico to southern Arizona, USA. Its name derives from the distinct zebra-like horizontal banding (bud imprints) on the blue-gray to gray-green leaves—a striking pattern that is the species' chief ornamental appeal. The broad, thick leaves bear dark marginal teeth at intervals, with a short but sharp terminal spine. Mature rosettes reach 60–100 cm in diameter, suitable for both container and landscape planting. Cold-hardy to approximately -5°C, though it is sensitive to cold-wet conditions and benefits from rain protection in winter. The intensity of bud imprint patterning varies between individuals, with boldly marked specimens being especially prized among collectors.
