Agave pelona
A beautiful agave from Sonora, Mexico. Attractive contrast between smooth green leaves and black spines.
Agave pelona is a medium to moderately large species from the Sonoran Desert of Mexico. The name 'pelona,' meaning 'bald' or 'smooth,' refers to the nearly spineless leaf margins—a notable departure from the typical armed agave. The leaves are bright green to blue-green with a glossy surface, tapering to a sharp black terminal spine. The smooth margins give the plant a clean, elegant silhouette. Mature rosettes reach 40–70 cm tall and 60–100 cm wide. Growth rate is moderate. Full sun brings out the best leaf gloss; a bright outdoor position is recommended. Water when the soil dries, reducing in winter. Use a well-draining soil mix. Cold hardiness is around 5°C—keep frost-free. The combination of a smooth, safe-to-touch surface (aside from the terminal spine) and handsome glossy foliage makes this a distinctive and increasingly sought-after species among collectors. Like many Sonoran agaves, it is highly tolerant of heat and drought.
