Agave albopilosa
A rare agave with white cotton-like fibers at leaf tips. A relatively new species described in 2007.
Agave albopilosa is a rare species described as new to science in 2007, native to limestone cliff faces in Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, Mexico. Its extraordinary distinguishing feature is a dense tuft of white, cotton-like fibers at the tip of each leaf—a characteristic unique to this species within the genus. This novel trait attracted immediate and intense interest from agave enthusiasts worldwide upon the species' description. The leaves are medium-width, green, with marginal teeth, and the white fiber tufts are conspicuous even at a distance. Mature rosettes reach 30–60 cm in diameter. Growth is slow, and the plant commands premium prices due to its rarity. Cultivate in full sun with excellent drainage; water sparingly and reduce to monthly in winter. Cold tolerance is around 5°C—protect from frost. Some growers suggest incorporating limestone aggregate into the soil mix to replicate native growing conditions. It remains one of the most prized species among serious agave collectors.
