Agave stricta
Unique agave with needle-thin leaves spreading in a sphere. Sea urchin-like appearance is distinctive. Cold-hardy.
Agave stricta is a distinctive species native to dry rocky outcrops and cliff faces in Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico. Unlike most agaves, its leaves are narrow and needle-like, 20–40 cm long, and produced in such abundance that the plant forms a dense, perfectly spherical mass resembling a sea urchin or porcupine. Mature plants reach 40–60 cm in diameter. Growth is slow, and the plant spreads through offsets. It thrives in full sun and is highly drought-tolerant, making it one of the more forgiving agave species to cultivate. Water sparingly—monthly in winter. Use a fast-draining soil mix to prevent rot from moisture accumulation in the dense leaf mass. Cold tolerance extends to around 5°C. Its sculptural, spherical form gives it strong appeal both as a collector's plant and as a bold interior or garden accent. Its relative ease of care makes it a recommended choice for those new to agaves.
