The goldfish category on Bree-Choku lets you welcome a wide variety of goldfish — common, ryukin, ranchu and more — directly from the breeders who raised them. Goldfish are hardy coldwater fish, but they grow large and produce a lot of waste, so ample water volume and filtration are essential. Even beginners can choose a goldfish suited to their home after learning tank cycling, water management, and the body-shape differences among strains.
1Know that goldfish are coldwater fish
Unlike tropical fish, goldfish are coldwater fish that can be kept without a heater. They dislike extreme heat, and sudden temperature changes can make them ill. They are easy to keep at room temperature, but watch for overheating in summer. Care for them with seasonal temperatures in mind.
2Provide a tank suited to their adult size
Goldfish grow well even from a small size, and some types exceed 20 cm in length. A bowl or small tank quickly becomes cramped and water quality deteriorates. Anticipate their adult size and prepare a generously sized tank from the start.
3Strengthen filtration to keep water clean
Goldfish eat heartily and produce a lot of waste, so their water fouls easily. Provide filtration with capacity to spare for the tank volume and make regular partial water changes a habit. Not letting ammonia and other toxins build up is fundamental to preventing disease and keeping goldfish healthy.
4Cycle the tank before welcoming fish
Before welcoming goldfish, mature the tank until filter bacteria can break down toxic ammonia and nitrite. Cycling takes several weeks. Run the filter first and welcome fish only once water quality is stable to reduce early problems.
5Understand body shape and care differences by strain
Goldfish range from the slender body of the common goldfish to the round bodies of ranchu and ryukin. Round-bodied goldfish swim less well and tend to be prone to swim bladder problems. When keeping several together, matching swimming ability and body shape helps avoid competition for food.
6Know the common diseases
Besides white spot disease, round-bodied strains can show swim bladder disorder, where buoyancy becomes erratic. Poor water, sudden temperature changes, and overfeeding are common triggers. Maintaining water quality and noticing changes in appetite or swimming early help with prevention and quick response.
7Acclimate goldfish carefully on arrival
Goldfish are hardy, but sudden differences in temperature and water chemistry are stressful. Float the bag in the tank to match temperature, gradually add tank water to acclimate them, then release. Do this right away on delivery and observe them before moving to the main tank.
