American-bred goldfish with long flowing tail. Active and fast swimmer, ideal for outdoor ponds. Hardy and long-lived.
The Comet is an American-developed goldfish variety created in the 1880s, credited to Hugo Mulertt of the U.S. Fish Commission. Its defining characteristic is a long, deeply forked single tail fin that can equal or exceed the body length, trailing behind the fish like the tail of a comet in motion. The Comet shares the Wakin's streamlined body and is one of the fastest-swimming fancy goldfish. It is exceptionally hardy, tolerating temperatures from 5 to 30°C, and is well-suited to large outdoor ponds where it can grow to 20–35 cm. Common colorations include red, white, sarasa, and orange. Due to its active nature and competitive feeding behavior, Comets should not be housed with slow fancy varieties. With proper care, Comets are among the longest-lived goldfish, often surviving 10–15 years or more.
