The Ryukin is one of Japan's most iconic fancy goldfish varieties, believed to have arrived in Japan during the 18th century via the Ryukyu Islands (present-day Okinawa), which gave the breed its name. Its most distinctive feature is the pronounced hump at the shoulder and a deep, round body profile that creates a striking silhouette when viewed from the side. The tail fins are long and flowing, available in three-tail, four-tail, and cherry-blossom tail forms. Ryukin are relatively hardy and adaptable to a wide pH range of 6.5–7.5, making them suitable for beginner fishkeepers. They have hearty appetites and should not be housed with slower, more docile varieties. To prevent swim bladder problems, feed easily digestible foods in moderate amounts.
