The Saint Bernard is a breed of very large working dog from the western Alps in Italy and Switzerland. It was originally bred for rescue work by the hospice of the Great St Bernard Pass on the Italian-Swiss border. The hospice, built to offer a refuge for travellers crossing the treacherous pass, began breeding Saint Bernards for avalanche rescue around 1660. Saint Bernards are known for their gentle, calm temperament and are especially patient with children. They are one of the heaviest dog breeds, with males typically weighing between 64 and 120 kilograms.
