Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

關於這種疾病

An orthopedic and neurological condition in which a degenerated or herniated intervertebral disc compresses the spinal cord, causing pain and neurological signs. It is particularly common in chondrodystrophic breeds but can occur in any breed.

Back or neck pain, hunched posture
Weakness or paralysis of hind or fore limbs
Wobbly gait or dragging of limbs
Difficulty urinating or defecating, or incontinence
Reduced activity level, reluctance to be picked up

主要原因

Intervertebral disc degeneration due to aging or genetic factors
Genetic predisposition common in chondrodystrophic breeds (Dachshunds, Corgis, etc.)
Chronic spinal stress from obesity or excessive exercise
Repetitive jumping or frequent use of stairs

Maintaining a healthy weight and installing ramps to reduce jumping and stair climbing are beneficial. For chondrodystrophic breeds, limiting high-impact activities and undergoing regular orthopedic and neurological health checks are useful from a preventive standpoint.
