Corydoras pygmaeus
An ultra-small corydoras. Unusual habit of mid-water schooling, perfect for nano tanks.
The pygmy corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) is an extraordinarily small armored catfish native to the Madeira River basin in Brazil, representing one of the smallest species in the Corydoras genus at just 2–3 cm. Unlike most corydoras that remain bottom-oriented, pygmy corydoras are unusual in their tendency to school in mid-water — a behavior that makes them uniquely captivating in nano aquariums. Their silver body crossed by a black horizontal stripe is neat and charming. They are strongly social and should be kept in groups of ten or more for natural behavior. Water conditions of pH 6.0–7.5 at 22–26°C and fine, rounded substrate are recommended, consistent with other corydoras requirements. Their tiny mouths necessitate appropriately small foods: powdered foods, finely crushed tablets, frozen daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. They retain the characteristic intestinal air-breathing of the genus. Highly peaceful, they coexist with most small fish and shrimp, though fish with large mouths pose a predation risk. Breeding follows the typical corydoras T-position method, with eggs deposited on glass or plant surfaces.
