Similar to neon tetra but blue-green line runs entire body. Ultra-small, most beautiful in large schools.
The green neon tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is a small characin native to the blackwater rivers of the upper Orinoco and Negro River basins in South America — the same habitat as the cardinal tetra. The smallest of the three Paracheirodon species at 2–3 cm, it is distinguished by a more greenish-turquoise tint to its lateral blue stripe and a reduced area of red pigmentation compared to its relatives. It is the most demanding of the three to keep, requiring water conditions that closely replicate its acidic blackwater home: pH 4.5–6.5, very soft, with tannin supplementation via catappa leaves or driftwood for best coloration. Water temperature of 22–28°C is suitable. Highly sensitive to water quality fluctuations, small but regular water changes are essential. Groups of ten or more form a shimmering turquoise-green school that catches light beautifully. Peaceful and compatible with other micro fish, they prefer appropriately small foods: fine granules, frozen daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. Less widely known than the neon tetra, green neon tetras are a premium choice for dedicated blackwater biotope aquariums.
